I want to write an essay on "benevolent misogyny" in media and fandom.

I was going to mainly reference Harley Quinn and Alicent Hightower (and Cheryl Blossom a bit), but I realized it goes past UWUifying female villains and antagonists. This is done to any kind of female character.

A perfect example is Dinah from Starlight Express. I'll save it for the essay, but I have an entire tag of rants on my StEx blog explaining my frustration with this to give you an idea.

If you have any other examples (villain or not), please suggest them, and I may mention them in the essay.

did Penelope really love Cheryl?

What a question. I actually had to think about this one for a little while.

My initial response is: No.

Even if Penelople thinks she did love Cheryl, the way she treated her over the years, even as an adult, was anything but loving.

Even coming back to plead forgiveness and give Cheryl Heather's letters. To call that loving would be a stretch. It was an attempt to absolve her guilt at best. The damage was done and thoroughly.

To actually love someone means to treat them with respect. To listen to their needs and to tend to those needs. Love is about listening. It's about being present for another person.

Penelope has been listening a bit, sure. She knew what she was doing was selfish and cruel. But she never once stopped to tend to Cheryl's emotional needs.

Her guilt in Season 6 is exemplary of this. She knows she never gave Cheryl a loving home. She can excuse herself however she wants, but she knows what she did.

She tormented Cheryl her entire life and then came back to beg for forgiveness. Penelope is lucky Cheryl didn't kill her with that candlestick. A testament to her own growth as a person that she didn't.

I would like to think that, if Cheryl had defeated the comet and life had continued, they MIGHT have been able to salvage some semblance of a relationship over the years. It would be a lot of work.

So, yeah. No. I don't think Penelope really loved Cheryl at all. I think she systematically abused her for years and felt bad about it later.

That's not love.

I know there's so much going wrong in the world right now that Christmas was already going to be dark, but my mom just found out a little bit ago that her cousin's wife and 2 of their kids were hit head on by a drunk driver on their way to church this morning. The wife died on impact, and the 2 kids were airlifted to the hospital. I was too young and they were too far from where we live for me to really know them, but my mom knew them well. My mom and the wife both had non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and managed to survive. Christmas Eve and one man making a stupid decision ruined Christmas for huge parts of my family; there are a lot of us.

Don't drink and drive. Please. Don't steal people from their families.

Loretta is such a misunderstood character, even by her own family. Just finished 4x14 & 4x15 and it’s so hard to get through all of the Loretta hating this season. I’m not sure it’s all deserved either. Like she had to be going through so much and at 17 with no support from anyone. Not to mention she 100% had post-partum. And then when Hayden comes back she is still so sad and triggered by it all. I don’t think what she did was right but I think it’s so sad that no one is there for her. Everytime Pascalle or Van went through anything emotional, especially in later seasons Loretta is there for them. It’s just sad that even when Loretta breaks down to Pascalle, she still doesn’t see how much Loretta has mourned her relationship with Hayden and is still dealing with the heart break of all that and then being forced into a pregnancy she didn’t want. It’s such a good storyline. And I definitely think when she came to tell Cheryl not to baptize Baby Jane that she did care. I think that’s been her problem. She cares too much and so she lashes out. She can barely stand to be around Jane not because she hates her, everyone thinks Loretta hates Jane, but I just think she scares her. And reminds her of Hayden and all of the shit that brings with it. It’s easier for her to simplify it to love and hate because she can’t deal with all the other messy bullshit. I definitely think after the show as Hayden and Loretta continue their married life, there’s a pregnancy scare. All this shit comes up again.

Good! I'm not sure I'd even believe it if I saw it in the news, I'd have to hear that one from you personally. Right, so Aaron must be at a wizard bar in London that plays live French music. I'm glad you think that's something. He hasn't said anything else about the quidditch players, he got all cagey about it when I tried to ask. Which is extra weird because that should be exactly the kind of thing he'd want to write about even as much as he hates writing. I got the impression he's talked to them some before but he isn't hanging out with them, but no idea if that's at the bar or somewhere else. He definitely isn't into the idea of me visiting, which just makes me feel even more like I need to do it.

That makes sense. It's your thing, your impact, showing people that you were there and you pulled off something really special. And you get to do it with Grant. I get that. I'm glad you have something like that. Maybe you and Grant can keep hosting cool charity events even after your White House days are over.

It was! Not our usual vibe but I think that's what made it fun. That and the fancy holiday drinks for sure. Thanks. Definitely gave me a new appreciation for all the work that you must do for your White House party.

The parents are tired guys. So... so... tired.

Had an idea for you.

Due to Shenanigans Danny and Jazzy end up in the DC verse which has much less ectoplasm than their own verse. Even more concerning is they are close to 80 years in the past from their point of view. Teenage Danny gets an apprenticeship with a clock maker and Jazzy becomes a school teacher.

Eventually Jazzy ends up marrying Thomas Constantine and having first Cheryl and then John and his twin. I don't know if Danny would ever get married or if he's simply focusing on his trade. By the time Jazzy dies as in John's backstory Uncle Danny is there to step up and help take care of him and Cheryl while Thomas falls apart. All throughout there childhood Cheryl and Johnny know they can count on Uncle Danny and with Danny's prompting John learns from the previous Laughing Magician and is not just winging his magic. Cut to modern day and John joins the JLD. Eventually he gets injured and they need to talk to his power of medical attorney to get permission for treatment or maybe John got a concussion and they need to have somebody they can send him home with. They see Danny Fenton and a New York address and assume this is a boyfriend. Superman Zips over to the address and find out that no, this is not his boyfriend, this is his uncle. Superman carries now late 90s Danny Fenton to Mt Justice to take care of his beloved Little Johnny. The JLA are never going to let him live that down!

Either that or there is a family day and John asks if he can have a relative come to the Watchtower. Batman thinks he means a relative of Cheryl's and after a thorough background check of all the Constantine - master family agrees. Then old Uncle Danny comes up! Danny still loves the stars and has kept up with the advances of the engineering over the decades as well as learn necromancy so he can talk to his sister in this reality. He is having a blast!

He may also attempt to adopt that poor Revenant over there though.

the mile high job is, hands down, one of the fucking BEST episodes in the entire series

i saw a post talking about that poor flight attendant and how fucking FUNNY the episode would be from her pov, but like. there is so much happening in this episode that is pure gold

parker playing flight attendant and being TERRIBLE at it, and the other attendant just.....being annoyed with her but not bothering to correct her or say anything. she is NOT paid enough for this bullshit

eliot just...being an air marshal. being grumpy and disgruntled the ENTIRE flight. telling that guy to watch the movie instead of watching eliot rifle thru other people's belongings with ZERO explanation of what he's doing. fighting a dude in an PLANE BATHROOM and then stealing his knife

nate and sophie having a marital dispute the ENTIRE EPISODE and not really being much help overall

and hardison... hardison MY BELOVED he's playing office and he's having the time of his LIFE. getting in by pretending to be a maintenance guy who doesn't speak english. gaslighting the guy who got off the elevator next to him into thinking he's just being racist when he (correctly) concludes that hardison and the maintenance guy are the same person. hijacking a meeting and running it well. redirecting everyone by pretending its his birthday. wearing the silly hat while wrapping up the con. pretending to get fired so he has an exit. DOING HIS JOB SO WELL THAT HE MAKES CHERYL BELIEVE HE'S ACTUALLY WORKED THERE THE ENTIRE TIME.

and then, of course, there's the whole "landing a plane on an ocean highway" that never fails to give me cold chills bc like. imagine ur drivin down that highway, normal thursday, when u hear a plane overhead. not unusual, but it sounds a little close.... and then you fucking SEE the plane pass over you REALLY FUCKING CLOSE before coming to a stop just ahead of u
